Lady Gaga FaceTimes Apple CEO Tim Cook and Gets $10 Million Donation
Singing sensation Lady Gaga has been doing a bit of fundraising before the One World: Together at Home concert and so far she has managed to raise a whopping amount thanks to her own charity. But not only that, Gaga got on FaceTime with one of her famous friends and convinced him to donate a further 10 million dollars to the cause. You've all heard of Lady Gaga, right?
Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in 1986, in New York City, the singer has gone on to rise in the ranks of the celebrity world as one of the most unconventional and unique artists of this generation.
Gaga started learning piano from a very young age...
It was clear she was always destined for a career in the music industry. Check out this adorable video of baby Gaga playing the piano!
Her career stems from humble beginnings...
Before curating the “Lady Gaga image,” a determined young Stefani would haul her keyboard around bar upon bar trying to get noticed in the industry.
After dropping out of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York City University, Stefani began to curate the Lady Gaga persona.
After ditching college to manage her own career, Gaga well and truly got stuck in – transforming herself from Stefani to the global sensation-to-be… Lady Gaga. Her over-the-top fashion sense, and sheer grit, quickly gained attention and she signed with Akon and Interscope Records to work on her debut album – released in 2008.
Her debut hit single "Just Dance" secured her global fame.
The star made her mainstream breakthrough with her grammy-nominated single “Just Dance,” which propelled her to commercial and musical stardom.
Though she quickly became known for something other than her music...
Her eccentric, outlandish fashion sense became a huge part of her identity and something that she quickly started being known for.
In the first years of her chart-dominating career, her fashion choices gained her just as much attention as her music.
And you have to admit, you can’t blame people. After all, even her street-style ensembles were full-blown works of art. “Casual” and “paired-back” are clearly foreign concepts to the pop powerhouse – and that’s what makes her so great. It’s boring to be conventional.
But, Gaga recently admitted that she used to try and shock people with her eccentric looks to gain attention.
“I used to try to wrap my brain as heavy as I could around what I could do to…Instead of being shocking (I used to say “shock art” or “performance art”), I would use the word “bemuse,” which is basically putting the audience in a state of confusion where they can’t look away. I used to just go, ‘What am I going to do next to get people’s attention?’,” she explained to Oprah. You only have to look at likes of the meat dress (which Gaga says she didn’t actually think was that jaw-dropping) to understand her wacky artistic visions.
Her looks never failed to turn heads.
She is always reinventing herself; whether it’s changing her hair, make-up, or wearing 10-inch heels, no one can pull off memorable looks quite like Gaga.
When it comes to her music, she has delivered hit after hit.
It seems like everyone knows the words to anthems like “Born This Way,” “Edge of Glory,” and “Poker Face”. There’s no doubt that she reigned supreme in the ’10s music scene.
Album's such as 2013's ARTPOP and 2016's stripped-back Joanne haven't had the same sucess as their former chart-topping precessdors.
But her long-anticipated Superbowl half-time show performance (aka one of the biggest and sought after gigs you can land) in 2017, reignited some popularity with such tracks.
But Gaga has ventured off into other areas of the entertainment industry.
The star has many strings to her bow and has crafted an impressive acting career for herself.
She started off with the odd cameo...
For example, the star featured in 2013’s Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For the following year. She also notably starred in American Horror Story: Hotel as the countess – a role which earned her a Golden Globe Award.
But she landed her leading big-screen role back in 2018 in Bradley Cooper's remake of A Star Is Born.
Her role as an aspiring singer, Ally Maine, earnt her significant critical acclaim, including an Oscar for her original song on the movie’s soundtrack, “Shallow.”
The movie became the film of the year.
While at first controversial, the casting choice of Gaga for the movie turned out to be excellent, and for sure is one of the main reasons the film has been so successful.
But her profound big-screen success hasn't stopped her focusing on other projects.
The star has turned full-blown beauty mogul – launching her inclusive beauty brand, Haus Labs, back in July last year.
Haus Labs has been well-received in the beauty community.
“I felt that I had the platform and had built the foundation around what I stand for so that when this company came out, it would be a rebellion in a kind way against the status quo of beauty as it is today, which is in many ways on social media, a competition. It’s a beauty pageant in a lot of ways,” the star explained during her cover story for Elle Magazine. “This company exists in an influential space in culture where we say, ‘Our Haus. Your Rules.’ And everyone is welcome—all gender identities.”
Gaga is also well immersed in the world of activism.
Coming from her own past of bullying, Gaga is extremely passionate about raising awareness around mental health and empowering youth. The star co-founded the Born This Way Foundation with her mother in 2011. The non-profit aims to create a “kinder” world by improving the understanding of mental wellbeing, creating safe spaces for youth and mental health first aid in educational establishments.
Although her latest moves are her most admirable yet...
It was recently revealed that the star has raised a staggering $35 million for the World Health Organization (WHO).
The star revealed the news at the WHO's press conference online.
The funds were raised by herself and Global Citizen, and will go towards the WHO’s relief fund for the virus. But that’s not all…
She raised a further 10 million dollars after a FaceTime call with the CEO of Apple.
Read on to see the full video. In an interview for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tim Cook pledged the substantial amount claiming “we [Apple] are really proud to be part of this.”
It seems as if the two had already discussed the matter previously...
Gaga said: “We spoke last night about a certain number for the donation and it was quite sizeable. I just wanted to make sure we were OK on that this morning – can I confirm you for that donation?” And of course, he did confirm it.
The news comes after Gaga recently announced a special concert...
During the One World: Stay at Home benefit, Gaga will perform alongside a stellar lineup, including Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Stevie Wonder, Kacey Musgraves, Paul McCartney, John Legend, Keith Urban, and Elton John. More names are set to be announced soon.
However, the star said the purpose of the concert was not as a fundraiser, but to provide "entertainment, comfort, and solidarity."
“Put your wallets away … and sit back and enjoy the show you all deserve,” she added.
You can watch the full video of the interaction between Gaga and Cook here:
One World: Together at Home will air April 18th, at 8pm EST so keep your eyes peeled. If you’re itching for more news about the special concert, then keep scrolling to see the entire lineup.
We have never needed Hulu more than we do now...
Lockdowns have been implemented all around the world and millions have been left confided indoors… meaning lots of TV-binging will be getting done.
Hulu is one of the most popular streaming services here in the United States...
And it has everything.
Partially owned by The Walt Disney Company...
Hulu was launched in 2007 and since then, the streaming service has come in leaps and bounds offering an endless selection of movies and TV.
Even though the company hasn't stated the size of its library...
It has been estimated that has approximately 1,650 TV shows and over 2,500 movies. Now, that’s a lot of binging!
And what users love so much about the streaming service...
It is constantly updating its library with new and up-to-date content.
And their most recent addition is a pretty special one...
Parasite is now available for users to watch.
For those who aren't familiar...
Parasite is a 4-time Oscar-winning movie that was released in South Korea last year, and it most certainly lives up to that title.
It was written and directed by Bong Joon Ho.
Based in Seoul, the movie follows a poor family, the Kims, who con their way into becoming the servants of a rich family, the Parks. But things don’t turn out as quite expected, and the Kims find themselves digging themselves into an inescapable deep hole.
It is unbelievably gripping...
And Bong Joon Ho’s direction of the whole thing was simply beautiful.
Predictably, reviews of Parasite were phenomenal.
“What I will say is that this film, more than just about any other I’ve seen, put me through so many different emotional states during its 132-minute runtime, and did so without ever feeling muddled or tonally inconsistent. Parts of this movie were hilarious. Parts were heartbreaking. Other parts were insanely suspenseful,” one user wrote on IMDB.
And of course...
Hulu subscribers are overjoyed with the fact that this incredible movie is now ready at the click of a button.
But with the internet being the internet...
There are some people out there who aren’t impressed (somehow) with this new addition.
One Twitter user decided to voice his opinion directly to Hulu.
He simply wrote, “Pathetic movie.” Okay then…
Amazingly, Hulu responded.
“It won… four Oscars…” they wrote back, which is enough said, we must say!
Another user then decided to get involved...
“It’s not in English, no one wants to watch a movie that they literally have to read to understand what’s going on. Sound is such a huge part of movies and it being in a different language is so weird,” they ignorantly wrote.
And this is when Hulu completely shut down these narrow-minded people.
“If you don’t want to read subtitles, you can always learn Korean!” they simply wrote. Mic drop.
There is a reason why Parasite won so many awards...
And for someone to judge a movie because it isn’t in English is extremely ignorant and narrow-minded.
Twitter users were delighted with this response...
And we all feel that whoever was behind the Hulu Twitter account well and truly put these people in their place.
Subtitles shouldn't be a reason to not watch a movie...
Especially one like Parasite!
