Polar Bears Are Being Forced Into Cannibalism Due to Climate Change, Scientist Says
Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll probably know that our planet isn't exactly in good shape. In fact, experts have said that global warming is now happening at an "unprecedented" scale, with many claiming that human civilization may come to a screeching halt within just 3 decades. Not to mention the detrimental effect on wildlife. But there's one species that is undoubtedly feeling the effects of global warming more than most - polar bears. Although now, things appear to have reached new, devastating heights... Keep scrolling for the full story.
We are in the midst of a climate change crisis.
The devastating impacts of global warming and our consistent inability to do anything about it is sending our planet down a very bleak path.
From soaring temperatures to rising sea levels, global warming seems to be hitting the headlines more than ever.
In the wake of extreme weather conditions and natural disasters last year, The UN warned that we have just twelve years to limit climate change and prevent global warming from exceeding the maximum of 1.5C.
Despite stark warnings, many people seem to bury their heads in the sand on the issue.
Worryingly, our very own president, Donald Trump, is one of those people, who continually deny that global warming is even a thing in the first place. And, if this is what our political leaders believe, then what chance do we have?
He's not the only one who denies its existence.
Several “climate deniers” believe that the rapid rising temperatures is simply a result of the earth’s “natural cycle,” just like the ice age. Although this has since been proven wrong after experts established that the climate change that we are experiencing is on a scale that far exceeds temperature fluctuations during the last 2 millennia.
The issue only seems to be escalating.
If the future of our planet wasn’t looking bleak enough, experts have now shattered the “we’ve got twelve years left” to act theory, claiming that political steps to enable the cuts in carbon need to take place before the end of this year, otherwise we will be in a very dire situation.
There is some hope, though...
Just because many of the world’s political leaders are failing to recognize the significance of the climate change crisis, it doesn’t mean that other people aren’t. In fact, there’s a huge number of climate change activists who have been taking the world by storm, aiming to widen the conversation surrounding global warming and offer ways in which we can make a difference for the sake of our planet.
One of those people is seventeen-year-old Greta Thunberg, a pioneering climate change activist.
The teen has drawn in praise from many for raising awareness over the risks posed by climate change while holding politicians to account. Known for her matter-of-fact manner of weighing into the issue, Thunberg has somewhat become the face of the modern climate change movement.
More people may be listening, but things still need to change.
July 2019 was the hottest month ever recorded by humans in history across Europe, highlighting the urgency to act.
While much of the fate of the planet lies in the hands of politics, many climate change activists believe that, as individuals, we can still make a change.
There are many reasons attributing to climate change, with fast-fashion and agriculture being the main 2 culprits that are having the biggest effect on the planet.
But there are ways in which we can make small changes.
For example, since the increased media coverage on the issue of the fast-fashion industry, and the detrimental contribution it has to climate change, it seems logical to be selective about where and how often we buy clothes. Aka buying second hand, from sustainable brands, or just not as often.
Reducing meat consumption is also a big one...
When Cowspiracy aired on Netflix in 2015, it was the first time the world was introduced to the idea that the meat and dairy industries were really bad for the environment. So, naturally, in the wake of the so-called climate crisis, people are being urged to go vegan. Or if that’s too much, going vegetarian, or simply just reducing meat consumption – in particular, red meat.
Although it's safe to say that things aren't exactly looking up.
And that couldn’t be more the case for polar bears.
Polar bears are feeling the effects of climate change more than most.
As the temperature in the Arctic increases, the ice that polar bears depend on is melting on a mass scale.
It's simply disappearing...
Climate change is really making life tough for them, especially considering the fact that their main prey – seals – are also at risk. There have been so many heartbreaking sights – from starving polar bears to those clinging on to the last bit of ice they have.
WWF has declared the species as "vulnerable."
With around 22,000 now remaining, at the time of writing. It’s truly baffling to imagine the biggest land-based carnivores on the planet being so at risk in this way.
But things now seem to have reached new, devastating heights.
Many polar bears are now being forced into cannibalism.
According to a Russian expert, cases of polar bears killing and eating each other are on the rise in the Arctic.
It is believed this is mainly due to human disturbance and depletion in their habitat.
Cannibalism among polar bears has always occurred...
“Cases of cannibalism among polar bears are a long-established fact, but we’re worried that such cases used to be found rarely while now they are recorded quite often,” said Ilya Mordvintsev, a polar bear expert, to the Interfax news agency.
But it's a harsh fact that this behavior is increasing.
“We state that cannibalism in polar bears is increasing,” Mordvintsev added.
It has also been suggested that the cannibalism could be due to a shortage of food.
“In some seasons there is not enough food and large males attack females with cubs.” Interested in more news relating to climate change? Keep scrolling to learn about fifty small ways you can help the planet.
Aged just eighteen, Billie Eilish has taken the music industry by storm.
She’s been writing and creating her own music since she was incredibly young, and has risen to fame with huge hit album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? that was released in March, 2019.
She's known for being somewhat of a quirky character...
Billie was home-schooled, so she didn’t get the chance to interact with others of her own age apart from her siblings until she started to make waves in the music scene, which has given her something of a unique outlook on the world.
It also gives her music a different sound...
Many are pretty shocked that such a young person could create such hauntingly catchy tunes – and such suggestive lyrics.
Her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, ranked at number 1 on the charts.
Most artists have to release a couple of albums and dedicate their lives to promoting their work before they are even recognized as an artist, but then there’s a lucky few, like Billie, who reach superstardom on their first attempt. When the album was released, she wrote, “This album [means] the world to me please take care of it.”
But that wasn't even the first time that we saw her climbing the charts...
Her introductory EP, Don’t Smile at Me, went all the way to slot fourteen, and has already been awarded gold, an achievement that many artists can only dream of receiving.
Her most recent single Everything I Wanted has been a huge success...
And we must say, it is an incredibly beautiful song.
But, it's safe to say, Billie is as famous for her image as she is for her music...
She doesn’t dress like your typical eighteen-year-old-girl, that’s for sure.
She is known for rocking some pretty out-there looks...
Like this full white suit complete with Powerpuff Girl embroidery, which she pairs with some signature tiny sunglasses. Weird – but it kind of works?
Or what about this full green ensemble?
We have to say, love it or hate it, you can’t deny Billie’s commitment to her look – and that’s not something many of us are brave enough to pull off.
And Billie doesn't just experiment with fashion...
The star is no stranger to getting creative with her hair – opting for more out there looks and colors to fit her quirky aesthetic.
She donned silver hair for some time...
If anything, it was this look that became her trademark around 2017.
But more recently, she has been rocking something very eye-popping...
Billie has been sporting neon green roots.
This seems to be a favorite of hers...
Because she’s rocked the neon green for quite some time now.
But it turns out that there's a reason behind Billie's quirky look...
Her choices in fashion – which strongly consist of baggy, oversized clothes – are picked to protect herself from her global audience body-shaming her and judging her on her natural appearance.
Speaking in an interview last year, Billie explained these choices...
“That’s why I wear baggy clothes,” she said. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat a**,’ ‘she’s got a fat a**.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”
And we honestly don't blame Billie for having this attitude.
But sadly, people have already attempted to exploit and body-shame the teenager. Even when she was as young as fifteen, online trolls were trying to sexualize her for no apparent reason.
It's terribly sad that the singer has to put up with this treatment...
And it is a harsh reality that young women in the spotlight are always targeted by older people.
Many of these perverts have tried to blame her lyrics.
But let me get this straight. Just because there’s a line in her song “bad guy” that reads: “bruises on both my knees for you,” it’s now acceptable to start sexualizing her? I really don’t see the correlation here.
Billie has the right to write about whatever she wants...
There’s no excuse for sexualizing a seventeen-year-old… Or any woman of any age, for that matter.
But, when discussing the topic, Billie has said in the past that she doesn't want to remain covered up forever.
“I’m going to be a woman. I want to show my body,” Eilish told Elle in an interview last year. “What if I want to make a video where I want to look desirable?”
She said that, upon turning eighteen, she wants the option to sometimes reveal her body.
But she understands the repercussions a move like that could bring. “I know it would be a huge thing,” she said in the interview, adding, “I know people will say, ‘I’ve lost all respect for her.'”
Well, in December last year, the pop sensation turned eighteen.
And we have been yet to notice any changes in her fashion sense and clothing choices.
Billie kicked off her Where Do We Go world tour in Miami earlier this year, where she premiered a powerful video about body shaming.
The video was showcased during the interlude of her debut show...
And showed Billie slowly taking off her clothes alongside a powerful message voiced by the singer.
A video of Billie standing in an over-sized black sweater was projected over the stage...
And, narrating the video, Billie’s voice can be heard questioning everyone who has ever body-shamed her.
Fans can be heard cheering and screaming as the video shows Billie start to slowly remove layers of clothing.
Her narration starts by saying: “You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body.”
Billie's speech moved on to discuss her own personal experiences with fame and body-shaming, as she said:
“Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me — but I feel you watching. Always, and nothing I do goes unseen, so while I feel your stares, your disapproval or your sigh of relief, if I lived by them, I’d never be able to move.”
And, as she gradually removes more clothing and exposes her chest in a plain black vest, she questions:
“Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips?”
The crowd consistently screams and shrieks throughout the full clip...
As Billie’s narration continues: “The body I was born with – is it not what you wanted? If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why?”
“We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth. If I wear more; if I wear less, who decides what that makes me? What does that mean?”
Billie can then be seen fully removing her shirt and standing motionless in a black sports bra.
And, as the crowd screams and applauds, the video is drawn to a close with the simple questions, “Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
You can watch the full video here, which was filmed by one of the concert-goers in Miami.
It’s a truly powerful statement, and it’s fantastic to see Billie taking ownership and control of her own body.
But, of course, her decision wasn't without the risk of backlash.
Any woman taking control of her body was bound to trigger some people, and Billie has fared no differently.
Though most people praised the singer for her video...
Others weren’t so impressed and claimed that, because of her showing her shoulders, stomach, and chest, they had ultimately “lost respect for her.” I know, some people lead some really sad lives, don’t they?
But now, she has responded to these haters.
And, never one to hold back, Billie gave a spectacular reply to all those who claim to have “lost respect” for her.
And it turns out that she couldn't care less about what these people think of her.
In an interview with Dazed, Billie opened up about the incident and pointed out that, no matter what she wears, she’s going to receive hate and backlash.
She has realized that she simply can't win.
So she now does whatever the hell she wants to. She explained, “If I wore a dress to something, I would be hated for it. People would be like, ‘You’ve changed, how dare you do what you’ve always rebelled against?’ I’m like, ‘I’m not rebelling against anything, really.’ I can’t stress it enough. I’m just wearing what I wanna wear.”
She now just does what she wants to do.
Whether it be to wear more baggy clothes, wear more revealing clothes, or wear hardly any clothes at all, it will be her own decision. “If there’s a day when I’m like, ‘You know what, I feel comfortable with my belly right now, and I wanna show my belly,’ I should be allowed to do that.”
The young singer is truly paving the path to a more equal and inclusive world for women...
